Leukemia – Types and Warning Signs
Cancer that develops in the body’s blood-forming tissues is known as leukemia. While certain forms of leukemia are more common in children, other forms occur mostly in adults. Generally, leukemia involves the cancer of white blood cells. There are several types of leukemia. And the symptoms of different types of leukemia vary. So, to make you more aware, we have put together the different leukemia types and their warning signs.
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)
Also known as acute myeloid leukemia, it affects a group of white blood cells called the myeloid cells. Since it is acute in nature, the progress happens at a rapid rate. The early symptoms of AML are similar to flu or other common diseases, and include
- Fever
- Lethargy and fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Pale skin
- Easy bruising
- Frequent infections
- Unusual bleeding, such as nose bleeds and bleeding from the gums
- Bone pain
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL)
If you are looking at the symptoms of different types of leukemia, knowing about ALL is a must. It is an acute form or aggressive form of cancer, and advances rapidly. Acute lymphocytic leukemia is also known as acute lymphoblastic leukemia. ALL is most common in children under 5 years of age. The common symptoms include
- Bone pain
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Shortness of breath
- Pale skin
- Fatigue, Weakness or a general dip in energy
- Fever
- Bleeding from the gums
- Lumps caused by swollen lymph nodes in and around the neck, abdomen, groin and underarm
- Frequent infections
Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML)
Listing the symptoms of different types of leukemia will not be complete without explaining CML. This cancer affects the soft part inside your bones where blood cells are made. It is also known as chronic myloidleukemia. It does not cause symptoms usually and get detected during a blood test. The symptoms include
- Loss of appetite
- Fever
- Feeling full after a small meal
- Easy bleeding
- Bone pain
- Excessive tiredness
- Weight loss without any reason
- Pain or fullness below the ribs on the left side
- Night sweats
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
Many people suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukemia generally do not show any symptoms on diagnosis. It usually gets detected during certain blood tests prescribed by the doctor for other unrelated health problems. Routine checkups can also show up a high number of lymphocytes. However, even if people with CLL show symptoms, they are mild, vague and can also be associated with symptoms of other diseases, including
- Chills
- Fever
- Night sweats
- Swollen lymph nodes (felt as lumps under the skin)
- Weakness
- Tiredness
- Weight loss
- Sense of “fullness” in the belly after a small meal, caused by an enlarged spleen
