Types of Lymphoma You Should Know About
The human body has a lymph system that consists of lymph vessels and nodes, whose main job is to circulate lymph fluids. The fluid contains white blood cells that help fight infections. Now, cancer that affects the lymph system is called lymphoma. The different types of lymphoma are classified based on the portion of the lymphatic system it affects. The treatment of lymphoma will depend on the stage of cancer.
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Generally, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma starts in B-cells or Reed-Sternberg Cells, which are the immune system cells.
- Lymphocyte Rich/Depleted
The Lymphocyte Rich type of lymphoma is more commonly found in men. It accounts for 5% of the different types of lymphoma. On the other hand, the Depleted Lymphocyte lymphoma is a rare and more aggressive type of cancer. - Mixed Cellularity
About a quarter of Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases fall in this category. This lymphoma is quite prevalent in older men. This kind of lymphoma contains lymphocytes and RS cells. - Nodular Sclerosis Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Quite a few young adults are diagnosed with this condition rather than other types. The lymph nodes that contain scar tissue or sclerosis are affected when diagnosed with this type of lymphoma.
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is more common than Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. There are different types of lymphoma under this category. They are classified based on the cells they affect and the aggressiveness of the same.
- B-Cell Lymphoma
Among the different types of lymphoma in this category, it is the most aggressive kind. Typically called DBCL (Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma), it originates in B-cells that are abnormal. This fast-growing lymphoma is treatable, but if ignored, it can lead to death too. - T-Cell Lymphoma
There are several kinds of T-cell lymphomas. The diagnosis and treatment will depend on the type of such cancer as well as its stage. - Burkitt’s Lymphoma
This is one of the more rare forms of lymphoma and is found in the sub-Saharan region of Africa. It is known to affect those with a compromised immune system. - Follicular Lymphoma
In the country, it is said that among the different types of lymphoma, Follicular Lymphoma affects one out of five people. This lymphoma is first observed in the white blood cells, and the growth is quite slow. - Mantle Cell Lymphoma
This type of lymphoma is more often diagnosed in the later stages of cancer. It generally affects the bone marrow or involves the gastrointestinal tract. - Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma
Generally found in the lymph nodes, this kind of cancer is slow-growing. It is also called SLL and resembles the condition of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia.
Among the different types of lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is of the curable type. However, you must remember that the promise of a cure depends on the stage of cancer.
